Mrs. Moore's Kindergarten

Welcome To A New School Year!

Hi!  My name is Erin Moore and I have been teaching Kindergarten at Prescott for 13 years.  My very first class will be graduating from High School this year!  Congratulations Kindergarten class of 2004! I'm very excited to start a brand new year with our new Kindergarten class of 2016!

We started off the new school year by receiving a book from Clifford the Big Red Dog called "Clifford's Manners".  As we read about all the Clifford's good choices throughout the book, he got out of the classroom and we had to go on a scavenger hunt throughout the school to find him!  Thankfully, he left clues along the way and we were able to get a nice tour of the building. We also read "The Kissing Hand" a story about a raccoon who was a little nervous about starting school.  We had our parent(s) give a kiss on their child's palm and whisper a word of advice to help them throughout the day.  The children made a kissing hand craft and poem to give to their parent(s) in case they too are missed.

We have completed our first unit in the Pearson Reading Series.  We have covered identifying and naming uppercase and lowercase letters.  We have focused on initial and final letter/sound relationships for Mm, Tt, Aa and Ss.  We have covered the sight words:  I, am, the, little, a, to, have and is. We have focused on Writing our First Names (One uppercase letter and the rest lowercase), labels, making lists and writing a simple sentence using a frame.  We have also covered six weeks of Wiilson Language lessons and covered letters a, b, c, f, g, i, m, n, o, t, and u.  In mathematics we have covered the first 2 units.  Everyday Math spirals skills so please refer to the unit letters, home links and keep at home booklets to stay on top of the skills being covered.

Friendly Reminders:
1.  Please check your child's folder daily.  Take out papers to keep at home.  Sign the weekly log.  Help students with homework every Tuesday and Thursday and return to school the next day in the Return to School Side of the folder.
2.  Your child needs a snack everyday.  Snack is not provided by the school.  Breakfast and Lunch are free to all

Thank you to all the parents and guardians who helped prepare the little ones for this new and exciting chapter in the children's lives!  Please remember to check your child's folder daily and make sure they have their folder each and every day.

We have a new website and personal webpages so I thank you for your patience and understanding as I continue to learn about the process of creating my own page.  Also, once I receive the camera permission slips I will be posting pictures from class.

We read a few stories including "Duck for President" and we discussed what qualities make a good leader.  The students practiced voting to choose class games and activities during the week.  We also learned how to use tally marks to keep track of votes.  We made a craft featuring ourselves as President and wrote about what we would do if elected.
We had a day filled with pumpkin fun last Thursday.  We learned about how a pumpkin grows and completed a project on the growth sequence.  We completed a craft that used all the shapes we have been learning in math.  We tried foods made with pumpkin.  We also practiced our voting rights and voted on a design to carve on a pumpkin.  The friendly Frankenstein won and we helped scoop out our pumpkin while Mrs. Moore carved it!  We used our five senses for a concrete experience and had a day we will always remember!  Happy Harvest!
